The T-49 with a new layout of the fuselage nose section was produced in 1959 on the base of the Su-9 fighter. Modifications were also made to the fixed antenna radome and air intake positions. In early 1960 the aircraft performed some flights but the test program failed it because of the engine’s lack of power.
