At the beginning, Sd.Kfz.2 Kettenkrad was developed as a light means of transport for airborne troops. It was a small vehicle with a front similar to a motorcycle, characterized by its handlebars, central wheel and a rear designed to feature a six-wheel tracked structure. The Kettenkrad could transport two passengers in addition to the driver, or transport goods and ammunitions. It could reach a top speed of 70 km/h thanks to its OHV inline-four Opel water-cooling engine: the same featured on the Opel Olympia car. Its tow hook was able to drag up to 450 kg of goods and anti-tank cannons of moderate size. The Kettenkrad excelled at carrying loads and people on uneven grounds, such as those in sandy North Africa or the muddy Russian Steppe.
