The JU-87 Stuka was the primary dive bomber of the German Air Force throughout WWII. It made a significant psychological impact on enemy soldiers and civilians. The success of all dive bombers, however, depended on total air supremacy. Early in the war, this was guaranteed by the Luftwaffe fighters which permitted the Stukas to operate without being harassed by enemy aircraft. After the Battle of Britain, Germany could no longer sustain complete air superiority. Nevertheless, Stukas operated until the end of the war.
