Any assault on a Japanese position was a costly affair. Japanese soldiers fought under a code of battle, under which they preferred death to imprisonment. Very few Japanese were taken prisoner, most of them preferring ritual suicide in hopeless situations. The Japanese island garrisons built complex fortifications and practiced sudden counterattacks, streaming forth from hidden caves and bunkers in an attempt to recapture occupied areas. These factors made the Pacific island fighting especially vicious, comparable in savageness only to the bitter struggles of the Eastern Front.  This kit was created in conjunction with Master Box kits 3544 (hand-to-hand combat) and 3543 (US Marine Corps infantry) as part of the ‘Bloody Atoll’ Tarawa 1943 series.
