In the beginning of the 1930s an idea emerged that a high-speed bomber could outstrip contemporary fighters. One aircraft borne of this concept was the twin-engine bomber Do 17, designed by Dornier in Germany. Starting in the beginning of 1939 it was produced in modification Do 17Z, which featured a new ‘Waffenkopf’ type nose and an air-cooled Bramo 323 Fafnir engine. In 1939 and 1940 about 500 Do 17Z-1 and Do 17Z-2 bombers were produced. They took part in all Luftwaffe operations from 1939 through 1941, in Polish and French companies, in the Battle of Britain, and also in the Balkans and on the Eastern Front.
