The de Havilland Mosquito began its career as the DH.98. After the RAF turned down the initial design, de Havilland kept the project going as a private venture. Later in the war the Air Ministry inspected progress on the project and accepted it as a valuable recon aircraft, bomber and fighter. It was mainly composed of wood and was only lightly armed with four forward-firing cannons that sat in the forward belly of the aircraft and fired through blast tubes. It soon became one of the most versatile airframes in frontline service and acted as a night fighter, long range fighter, photo-recon aircraft, fast bomber and maritime strike aircraft. It was also operated by the US, Canada, Australia, China, France, New Zealand and more. Nearly 8000 were produced in all.
