The 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry was organized in Philadelphia in August 1861 as the ‘89th Volunteers’ and commissioned for three years of service under the command of Colonel Ernest G. Chorman. Following that they were bounced around various brigades in the Army of the Potomac. The 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry ceased to exist on July 24, 1865, when it was consolidated with the 16th Pennsylvania Cavalry. The regiment lost a total of 188 men during service: five officers and 55 enlisted men were killed or mortally wounded in battle and two officers and 126 enlisted men died of disease.
