Even though the KV-1 Mod.1941 was already heavily armored, there was still fear that it was inadequate. The Russians brought the turret’s armor protection up to a thickness of 75mm. Since the capability of producing such a thick armor plate was lacking at the time, an interim solution was to use bolt-on armor, 25mm thick, and bolt directly to the outside of the turret and some other parts of the hull. This type was usually referred to as KV-1s Ehkranami.
