The Pfalz E.IV was a monoplane fighter of mixed construction, some of which were equipped with double-row radial rotative engines. During the initial stages of WWI Pfalz E.IV fighters became popular with German pilots because of their high speed, good maneuverability and powerful armament – two synchronized machine guns firing through a propeller disc plane. The Pfalz E.IV was piloted by the famous ace, Hauptmann Rudolf Berthold, who was honored with the German Pour Le Merite award for his 28 victories. He had three confirmed kills piloting the Pfalz E.IV during March and April of 1915. In mid-1916, when newer fighters were posted to the European fronts, the Pfalz E.IV aircraft were transferred to the Eastern (Russian) front and also to pilot schools. In total 100 Pfalz E.IV were built in 1915 and 1916.
