The Mk.I tanks were evenly divided into two sexes depending on the armament. The female was armed with four 0.303 Vickers machine guns and one 8mm Hotchkiss machien gun. They first entered service in 1916 and saw action a month later as part of the Somme offensive. Many tanks broke down or got bogged down, and most were captured by the Germans. After a few brief interim variants of Mk.II and Mk.III, the Mk.I was ultimately succeeded by the very similar Mk.IV in 1917.
