USS Mount Whitney, originally authorized as AGC-20, was reclassified LCC-20 on January 1, 1969 and laid down January 6 by Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Co. As the second of a powerful and sophisticated new type of amphibious command ship, she provided integrated command and control facilities for sea, air, and land commanders in amphibious operations with the fleet. Mount Whitney serves as the Flagship for Commander Second Fleet/Commander Striking Fleet Atlantic. In 1999 Mount Whitney deployed to the Mediterranean as flagship for Commander 6th Fleet. On November 12, 2002, Mount Whitney deployed to the Central Command area of responsibility in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
