The Seehund (seal) was the most effective of the German midget submarines. The project XXVIIB was designed in the spring of 1944. Serial production shortly commenced and continued up to the end of the war, with 285 produced in total. Beginning in January 1945 they became active in combat. The Seehund midget subs served in 312 K-Flotilla based in Ijmuiden (Holland). They took part in 142 combat actions and sank nine Allied ships. After the end of the war four Seehund submarines served in the French Navy up until 1956.
