The German Tiger tank was active in Africa and Europe starting in 1942 and it was the first tank-mounted application of the high-velocity 8.8cm KwK 36. Over 1,340 were built from 1942 until 1944, when Tiger II was introduced and the title ‘Tiger I’ was applied to the Tiger tank retrospectively. Although expensive to manufacture and heavy on fuel consumption, Tiger I had a fearsome reputation with the power to kill an enemy tank more than a mile away. Features of the mid-production Tiger I included a new turret with smaller commander's cupola and rubber-rimmed road wheels. Late production Tiger I had steel road wheels. Tiger 131 at the Tank Museum in the UK is the only surviving Tiger I in running order.
