The appearance on the Eastern Front of the 76mm-gunned Soviet T-34 forced the Germans to begin development on a new tank to counter it. In April 1942, Daimler-Benz and MAN both presented designs for the VK3002 (DB) and VK3002 (MAN). The MAN vehicle was designed around traditional German lines, using a torsion bar suspension, and it was this design that was chosen for production as the Sd.Kfz.171 Panzer V (Panther) in December of that year. The Ausf.F was a variant of the earlier Panther that improved both the tank’s armor and manufacturability. The biggest change from earlier models was the modification of the turret to a smaller configuration which lowered the silhouette of the front side and included a Saukopf-style gun mantlet. In addition, the tank boasted a state-of-the-art stereo range finder. The steel road wheels that were equipped on the Panther Ausf.G were also to be fitted to the Ausf.F. However, though the smaller turret was installed on an Ausf.G as a prototype vehicle, the Ausf.F was never completed before the end of the war.
