PT boats were torpedo-armed fast attack crafts used by the USN during WWII, especially in the South Pacific war theater. PT stands for ‘patrol torpedo’ and its main operational use was to patrol and attack surface targets. The Elco Naval Division, located in Bayonne, NJ, was the most famous manufacturer of PT boats during the War. The well-known PT-109 belonged to the Elco PT-103 class, had a length of eighty feet and a full load displacement of 56 tons. Powered by three 12-cylinder 1500hp Packard gas engines, it was able to reach a speed of 41 knots. The primary offensive armament was four 21-inch torpedoes. In April 1943 the command of a PT-109 was taken by Lieutenant Junior Grade John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the future president of the US.
