While the Zero Type 21 fighter enjoyed success in the early stages of WWII, it was outclassed by American designs by 1943 in terms of speed firepower. Following on the heels of the Type 22 and 32 airframes, the Zero Type 52 constituted a major overhaul of the basic Zero design in an attempt to bridge this gap. The main wings were shortened, the engine cowling was completely redesigned and a single thrust-type exhaust pipe was installed. These factors increased the Zero’s speed, and the armament was improved with the belt-fed Type 99-2 Model 4 20mm cannon. Type 62 was the official designation for the fighter-bomber version of the Zero. It was capable of carrying standard drop tanks under each wing and the tail structure was strengthened to endure the stresses of dive bombing. The first Type 62 was completed in February 1945.
