The Hyuga-class are helicopter destroyers (DDH) (essentially aircraft carriers for helicopters) serving with the JMSDF. By placing the ship’s stealth technology-incorporating bridge on the starboard side of the vessel, its designers made possible the first JMSDF vessel with a full-length unobstructed flight deck, able to hold 11 helicopters as opposed to the previous 3 that could be accommodated on its predecessors. These are also the first JMSDF DDHs with a Combat Information Center (CIC) capable of serving as a flagship command room. The Hyuga-class are the first JMSDF ships armed with the FCS-3 anti-aircraft combat system, and their 16-cell Mk.41 VLS (vertical launching system) can be fitted with the next-generation Sea Sparrow (RIM-162 ESSM) missile. After the Great East Japan (Tohoku) Earthquake in 2011, helicopters from the Hyuga jumped into action, flying search and rescue missions in the disaster area. It additionally served as a king of offshore floating support for personnel and logistical transport operations of all services of the Japan Self Defense Forces, as well as American military units assisting in the relief efforts. At present, the Hyuga operates out of the Maizuru port in Kyoto Prefecture as the key vessel in the 3rd Destroyer Squadron, 3rd Destroyer Flotilla, playing active roles in maritime defense, disaster relief and international peacekeeping missions.
