The J-35F marked the debut of the second generation of Draken designs, with no noticeable change in appearance but considerable internal upgrades. The wings, which had been ‘dry’ to that point, now housed additional internal fuel tanks. Moreover, while all Drakens previous to the F were only capable of daylight interceptor combat operations, those going forward were fitted with radar-guided anti-aircraft missiles to give the fighter day, night and all-weather operational capability. Modernization of the F resulted in the J, fitted with improved radar and infrared equipment. Pylons were increased on the inner wing undersurfaces, making the Draken capable of simultaneous loadout with up to four missiles plus two fuel droptanks.
