The Junyo was an Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) aircraft carrier converted from the Nippon Yusen Kaisha (Japan Mail Steamship Company) ship Kashihara Maru. It was the first IJN carrier on which the ship’s bridge and funnel were contained in the same flight deck island superstructure. It was also the first IJN carrier fitted with Type 2 Mark 2 Model 1 Air Search Radar, which was located on top of its flight deck island. From May 25, 1942, only weeks after its completion, the Junyo set sail with IJN forces to participate in the Aleutian campaign. Filling in for IJN carrier losses subsequently suffered at Midway, it later fought in the Guadalcanal theater of operations alongside the Shokaku and Zuikaku. Although its origins as a passenger/merchant ship meant it could not match the IJN’s first line carriers in terms of speed or defensibility, its operational capacity was the equal of Hiryu class carriers and it was more than able to pull its weight in action.
