The German experimental Rheintochter (Rhine Maiden) R I was a two-stage anti-aircraft missile tested near the end of World War II. It was requested by the German Air Ministry in 1942 as a response to increasingly effective Allied bomber raids. This missile was one of the largest solid-fuel rockets of the war. Its first stage produced a large but short-lived thrust. A total of 82 test missiles were fired in 1943 and1944 before the RIII was developed to address the inadequate altitudinal capabilities of the RI.
