The British Army's Challenger 1 main battle tank made its debut in 1983. Its name comes from a battle tank used by the Allies during the Second World War. A 120 mm cannon and armor-specially developed for this tank-provides superior protection in battle. The Challenger 1 weighs 62 tonnes. A 1,200 hp engine helps it reach a top speed of 35 mph (56 km/h). Its crew consists of four soldiers. Production ceased in 2001.
