The Boeing 787 ‘Dreamliner’ is of the same airframe class as the earlier 767 but features improved long-range cruising capabilities and upgraded fuel efficiency. As a result the twin engine mid-size airliner is able to fly nonstop long range air routes that were once the exclusive domain of jumbo airliners. The first flight was in December 2009. The Boeing 787 is designed for economical operating costs. Around 50% of the airframe is of lightweight carbon fiber construction and the engines provide maximum energy efficiency. Several versions have been produced with various features. The 787-9 is twenty feet longer than the -8 that came before it, with ten feet extensions at fore and aft. In August 2014 its launch customer, Air New Zealand, flew the first commercial 787-9 on its first flight: Auckland to Sydney.
