Top 7 Glues for Scale Modelling

Posted by MegaHobby.com on Sep 16th 2016

The supply we modelers go through the most is plastic glue. Used at every point of each project, glue is not only the top selling item throughout the hobby industry, but something that each modeler finds a passionate preference for. Many have their preferred brands or types, while others aren’t quite sure where to start. The glue you choose should depend on your skill level, project, and patience with glue setting time. Here are our choices for the top seven plastic model glues to use:

Plastic Model Glue by Testors (TES3501)

Testors’ basic plastic model glue is the quintessential piece of a modeler’s workbench. Ask any plastic modeler in the world and he will most likely have a tube of this laying around. Although not great for advanced builds, Testors’ 3501 plastic glue is an inexpensive tube of glue that has all-purpose use in plastic modelling.

Extra Thin Cement by Tamiya (TAM87038)

Tamiya’s Extra Thin Cement is one of the top-selling glues in the hobby industry. Always in stock, it is much easier to apply than other powerful plastic welders, albeit with a much longer setting and drying time. It is not quite as powerful of a bond, but it is easier to work with and better for beginners and intermediate modelers.

Insta-Cure Super Thin ½ oz. CA Glue by Bob Smith (BSI101)

Bob Smith’s Insta-Cure Super Thin ½ oz. CA glue has a water-thin viscosity that joins parts with capillary action and cures in just seconds. Meant for use with tight-fitting surfaces, the parts need to be held together very tightly while the glue sets. In addition to plastic models, Bob Smiths’ CA glue works great on balsa and other wood materials.

Space Age Plastic Welder by Tenax (TEN7R)

One of the top plastic welders on the hobby market, Tenax 7R is always difficult to find. With quick setting time and a permanent seal once completely dry, Tenax is many modelers’ glue of choice when model building. Just be careful – this powerful glue can melt your plastic if it drips in the wrong place!

Bondic Liquid Plastic Welder w/LED Light (BND1)

One of the brilliant new developments in adhesives, Bondic is a product that bonds, fixes, and fills anything in just a few seconds. The technology utilizes a small LED light that instantly hardens the Bondic glue, sealing it to any surface it’s placed on. Though often used for household uses such as sealing pipes, fixing fences, and other DIY projects, Bondic’s benefit to modelling is a quick fix for small, difficult parts that would otherwise be very difficult to apply.

Plastic Weld 2 oz. Bottle by Plastruct (PLA2)

Plastruct’s 2 oz. plastic weld is instantly tacky. Setting in just a few minutes, the cement bonds permanently overnight. The special formula dissolves a thin layer of the surface on which it is applied in order to properly join and bond each side. Applied with a small brush or syringe, capillary action spreads the cement the entirety of each joint.

Roket Plastic Glue 30 ml by Deluxe Materials (DLXAD62)

The 30-milliliter bottle of Roket Glue by Deluxe Materials is both non-toxic and non-flammable. With a fine non-clog tip, this low odor glue bonds plastic in just ten seconds, bonding styrene, plastic card, and more. Water washable, Deluxe’s Roket Glue is one of the newest and most technologically-advanced plastic glue on the market.
