During the late 30s Union Pacific often used auxiliary engines to haul trains from Ogden, Utah up a steep pass to Wasatch. Wishing to simplify this system, their own development department was instructed to design a new locomotive capable of hauling a 3600 ton train up the steep pass. Most Big Boys were retired from service in 1961. This kit features a one-piece reproduction boiler, separate butterfly damper, detailed driver's cab, movable pony trucks, detailed driving wheels and rods, front cow-catcher, detailed tender with ladders, and finely detailed 18.8 inch railroad tracks for display.
