The American tank destroyer M36 was developed during World War II to equip the Allies with an effective response to German armored fighting vehicles such as the Panther and Tiger, which had incredibly strong armor and great firepower. The M36’s offensive ability was based on its 90mm M3 gun, an improvement on the 76mm chosen for the preceding M10, which had the same hull. Similar to all the American tank destroyers, the turret was open-topped in order to give a greater field of vision during the battle. M36B1’s effectiveness was proven by its longevity. Long after World War II it is still being used by many armies. It took part in the Iran-Iraq War during the 1980s and the Balkan Wars during the 1990s. Some of them were captured by the Iraqi Army during the war against Iraq in 2003.
