The Imperial Japanese Navy aircraft carrier Akagi was originally laid as a battlecruiser, but was converted to a carrier under the conditions of the Washington Naval Treaty. It was launched in 1925 and was assigned to the naval harbor facility at Yokosuka in 1927. Its most conspicuous characteristic was the three-level flight deck. The bridge was originally located just under the forward edge of the top flight deck. This resulted in the middle flight deck assuming a closed off configuration, effectively limited flight operations to the top and lower decks. In 1928, as the IJN began to put more emphasis on its aviation capabilities, the Akagi was assigned to the elite new Carrier Division 1, where it soon became a symbol of the ‘new’ IJN. During its first major refitting the Akagi was given a small temporary island on the starboard forward end of the upper flight deck, affording a good view of flight operations. For its second refitting the flight deck was converted to a full-length single level design and a more substantial island was installed, relocated from the starboard to the port side of the flight deck, shifted farther aft of the original location in order to put it closer to the center point of the carrier’s length.
